Frogs can freeze?
You heard right. Frogs can freeze. A few of our froggy friends use it as a tactic to survive the cold winter. Some frogs that do so are:
- Wood frogs
- Moor frogs
- Spring peepers
These frogs actually form ice crystals under their skin and in their body cavity! During this time their heart stops beating and their respiration stops. The high amount of glucose their body produces acts as a natural antifreeze, protecting their vital organs. So basically, they are frozen on the outside and liquidy on the inside. And once it unfreezes, it just traipses off to find a nice pond. The unfreezing process, which works inside out, is as follows:
- The heart starts beating
- The brain activates
- The legs begin to move
Stay froggy
